Tech on a Boat

Being a radio amateur, I am into all kinds of tech. Aprt from my own radio setup we need to have internet access, like a normal home does.

What about Broadband. What about poor 4G telephone signal.

As a bit of a techead kinda person, I need to have connection to the rest of the World.

Let’s start with a system I use for my broadband.

Huawei 4G Broadband system. I purchased this unit off of eBay.

4G

As this isn’t locked, it can take any SIM from the network gives you best coverage for your area.

I use 3.com as this has the best signal, and also have a few broadband streaming TV channels that don’t use your bandwidth to stream, e.g. Netflix and Deezer and a few others. The top package from 3 is 100Mg at £30 pm.

I am sure if you were talk to 3.com they could give you details of their packages. Must point out that I am not connected with 3.com and are not paid to talk about them. This is just what I use.

As I am a radio amateur, I have a couple of masts on my boat. I use one of them to mount the antenna abut 2.5mts up. Gives very good coverage. Once the broadband signal is in the boat and the WiFi is active, I use a WiFi extender to give coverage to the whole boat, so we don’t have any dead spots.

Poor 4G phone signal inside your boat. Not surprising really, it is a big metal box sitting in water.

What you need to do is bring a better signal to the inside of the boat.

Get yourself a couple of wire coat hangers. (the type that you get from the dry cleaners).

Follow the link below. It will take you through how to make the 4G antenna you need to improve the signal inside your boat. Worked for me, so why not have a go to make one.
